I will ask people to view these, as well as reading the chapters themselves, in advance of each class and will provide a recording of the passages. FOR COPYRIGHT REASONS, THE RECORDINGS SHOULD NOT BE PASSED ON TO ANYBODY ELSE.
Latin via Ovid provides complete coverage of the vocabulary and grammar needed to begin reading Latin poetry, particularly Ovid’s Metamorphoses, a collection of stories from Greek mythology, which has served as a source of inspiration for writers and artists for two thousand years. The book is meant to be completed in the 1st year of a university course, in which students would probably be attending 3-4 hours classes weekly. In the Latin II course, we are aiming to cover one quarter of the book in 10 2-hourly sessions. This should be enough time to cover many of the exercises but you will, in any case, need to spend time in preparation between classes and reviewing what we have already done. Individuals’ needs differ but you should aim to spend at least a couple of hours per week on this and longer if you can spare the time (I realise this is difficult in Hong Kong!). Flashcard sets on the CRAM site (www.cram.com), which will be used for vocabulary reinforcement in class, can be accessed via http://linguae.weebly.com/flashcards.html You will be welcome to email me (firstname.lastname@example.org) at any time if you need help between sessions.
You should have the following files which were sent to students on LATIN 1 (items in red include copyright material and should not be shared with anyone outside the class). If you have not done so already, I suggest that you keep all these files in single LATIN folder rather than leaving them just as attachments to different emails. If you are missing anything, you can download the non-copyright materials from the course website ( http://linguae.weebly.com/courses.html) and should contact me for the copyright ones. Session 2 27/4/18 Chapter 12 (Philemon et Baucis (pars secunda)) accusative and infinitive construction (with oral practice). Infinitive and present tense of 3rd conjugation verbs. Negative orders. The pluperfect tense (1st and 2nd conjugations). Adjectives used as nouns. Vocabulary revision.
Session 3 4/5/18 Chapter 13 (Echo et Narcissus) Superlative of adjectives, uses of ablative, recap of 3rd declension nouns (including neuters in –e, -al, -ar;N.B. the textbook does not mention the use of –i as ablative termination ) and rules for their gender Future perfect tense, pronoun quem, reflexive pronoun se.
