Both one act operas are parodies on the making and performing of opera. They were presented together at Vienna's Schönbrunn Palace in 1786 in a sort of musical competition between the established Salieri and the young Mozart. 3. An Introduction to Gianni Schicchi and La Serva Padrona - 19 JUNE 2013
Fun at the Opera: An Introduction to Opera Buffa To coincide with the production of "Duetto" -- two comic operas translated into English and adapted for the stage -- presented by the Italian Chamber of Commerce and Aurora Theatre at the Fringe Club 26-29 June.
We will be introducing the two one-act operas the plays are based on: Pergolesi's "La Serva Padrona" (The Maid Made Mistress") and Puccini's "Gianni Schicchi". Written almost two hundred years apart, both remain fresh and funny -- and, as you will see if you attend the stage performances -- relevant even in Hong Kong!
"La Serva Padrona" is the story of maid who wants to move up in the world and "Gianni Schicchi" is a story of will tampering, greedy relatives and young love in medieval Florence. ("Gianni Schicchi" shares -- with Dan Brown's new novel "Inferno" -- the great Dante as its inspiration.
